AMOS

The book of Amos is an 8th-century BC message in which God calls a humble shepherd to confront the wealthy, complacent Northern Kingdom of Israel with a message of judgment. A sermon series on Amos typically follows four sections: judgment oracles (ch. 1–2), where God pronounces doom on surrounding nations and Israel itself; sermons of indictment (ch. 3–6), exposing social injustice, corrupt worship, and religious complacency, centered on "seek the Lord and live"; visions of judgment (ch. 7–9), intensifying the threat of national collapse; and a promise of restoration (9:11–15), where God will "restore the fortunes of my people Israel." Key themes include God's sovereignty, the inseparability of justice and worship, and the hope found in God's faithfulness even within judgment.

Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they have despised the law of the Lord, And have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, Lies which their fathers followed (Amos 2:4)

Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” (Amos 3:1-2)
